Loving what you do is a must

Seriously. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, then what’s the point? Is there one?

I’ve found myself in situations that I really don’t enjoy, and it has really ruined my day (or career).

When I was in elementary school I was often encouraged to get involved with various school activities, especially sports. I was very shy and not as open-minded. They were “good” for me, they said. I resisted joining like the plague because I knew I wouldn’t fit in or be welcomed by those that played. Yet I found myself pulling others’ flags and passing around a football during the summer (thanks, Mom.).

I hated it.

I really did. I was good at the sport, but I didn’t really understand it, nor understand the point.

I grew up to understand it, though.

I also played basketball a little. I hated that just as much as football. I’ll always remember being in a camp and not understanding one of the plays we were practicing. The coach — whom I still loathe to this day — was screaming at me and a few other players. We were only in middle school for God sakes!

I was instantly turned off from there on out.

The other activities that I was involved in did not treat those involved like that. My piano teacher was always welcoming, helpful, and open. She was stern a few times, but never did I feel intimidated from her advice. Ever.

The coach, to this day, continues to scream at middle school kids over a simple sport…

Put yourself in my shoes when I was in middle school. I was good at the sports I played but disliked those involved. I was turned off and very uninspired, which drove me to slack… big time. I knew I was better, too. I knew I could accomplish so much more in something else.

You should now apply this to your life and job.

You’re very good at your job, but you don’t enjoy it; therefore, you’re slacking and are not able to apply yourself 100%. You’re probably only doing the minimal amount of work to get by and not get yelled at by your supervisor.

Your work should not just pay the bills. It should allow you to grow as an individual and professional.

Regardless of your position at your job, you deserve respect.

“When you practice gratefulness, there is a sense of respect toward others.” -Dalai Lama

You deserve to work a job where wake up in the morning and are excited to go to. By doing so, you will enable yourself to grow as an individual and professional. You’ll also go home a much happier person, which is a solid excuse in and of itself.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” -Marc Anthony
